INNOVATION IN ART & DESIGN

With the National Curriculum as the basis, the Art & Design curriculum at Langney permits children to learn proficient skills in a variety of disciplines.  From a young age, children are exposed to drawing, painting and sculpture in a variety of ways. We have advanced to having a strong cross-curricular link with computing where children are able to create digital art and explore other mediums. The children at Langney are exposed to known artists and designers to support them in their learning and raise aspirations to achieve.

BEING A CENTRE OF  EXCELLENCE IN ART & DESIGN

Our core aim is to raise the quality of visual arts teaching and learning through an artist-led and design-inspired curriculum. Subject matter is broad and includes culturally and ethnically diverse artists and designers.

We believe all children have a right to an excellent and rigorous art and design education.  Art is taught as a distinct subject in a skills-based manner that ensures progression in the forms of drawing, painting and sculpture.  In addition, children learn about craft makers, architects and designers to support their own projects.  Art and Design provides an excellent way to enrich the curriculum and link to other curriculum areas.

Sketchbooks are used as a creative tool for pupils to gather, collect, experiment and reflect.

TALENT DISCOVERY OF PUPILS IN ART & DESIGN

Art lessons at Langney Primary Academy enable children’s hidden talents and creativity to be enriched and explored through a varied programme of study and experience of painting, drawing and sculpture.

We are always looking to discover pupil talent and flair in Art & Design.  We have developed a prestigious Swale Scholars Programme for Upper Key Stage 2 children who demonstrate aptitude in this subject.  In partnership with our local Swale Secondary Schools, children in Years 5 and 6 who are predicted to achieve grades 7-9 at GCSE are selected to attend a once a week for a term, where they are exposed to specialist art teaching and facilities.

A BALANCE BETWEEN EXCELLENCE AND ENJOYMENT IN ART & DESIGN

The learning of skills in drawing , painting and sculpture simultaneously develops pupils’ artistic abilities and compliments their creativity.  It develops their imaginations, observational skills, physical skills, cognitive and critical thinking skills as well as their emotional development.

RAISING ASPIRATIONS & LIFE CHANCES IN  ART & DESIGN

As a school  with a wide spectrum of needs, we are aware that we need to provide learning experiences to meet the differing requirements of our pupils. Art is one of these that frees a child from the challenges of the ‘academic’ and opens up to them  a world of creative possibilities. By learning about a broad and diverse range of art and artists our message is that art can come in many different forms and is made by all sorts of people. It is not exclusive and is open to them now and as they develop. The world is full of art and we want our children to see there is no limit to their participation in it. They are surrounded by the work of artists in the design of the everyday, it exists within their own and other cultures and available to them in galleries across the world.

HEALTH & WELLBEING IN ART & DESIGN

Our school mantra is Active Body, Healthy Mind. We want to make space for creativity in our pupil’s learning. Art is a subject that should explicitly make time for exploration without fear of ‘getting it wrong.’  Art  allows a child to represent what they feel and experience but cannot always verbalise. It is therefore a form of expression that can build their self awareness and self esteem as they learn  to make their own decisions and take risks.
